GREENSBORO – Two of High Point's most accomplished athletes have joined an elite group of those who have impacted North Carolina sports. Two of High Point's finest athletes have officially taken their place among North Carolina's sporting legends. Heather Richardson Bergsma and Eddie Pope—two of just four High Pointers ever to compete in the Olympics—were inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame during a ceremony Friday evening at the Sheraton at Four Seasons Convention Center in Greensboro.

This year's 62nd Hall of Fame class is a who's who of Tar Heel State sports excellence. Alongside Bergsma and Pope, the inductees include golf standout Chip Beck (Fayetteville), football star Louis Breeden (Hamlet), basketball coaching legend Leonard Hamilton (Gastonia), former UNC basketball icon Tyler Hansbrough, Winston-Salem State running back Richard Huntley, tennis ace John Isner (Greensboro), basketball coach Norvell Lee (Smithfield), and wrestling coaching pioneer Jerry Winterton (Cary).

"It really is a privilege and an honor to be here with so many legends," Bergsma said during Thursday's press event at the Greensboro Complex. "Once you get the phone call and you see the class that you're in, you start Googling and think, 'Am I worthy enough to be a part of this class?' It's just really exciting and I'm honored to be here. It really shows that the hard work that I put into my sport of speedskating does pay off."

Bergsma's journey from High Point Central to the world stage is nothing short of remarkable. She competed at the highest levels of speedskating for over a decade, making Olympic appearances in Vancouver (2010), Sochi (2014), and Pyeongchang (2018). She made history by winning bronze in the team pursuit in 2018—becoming the first High Pointer ever to earn an Olympic medal. Her career boasts 88 World Cup medals, including 34 gold, and she captured four world championships in the 1,000 meters, her specialty. Bergsma also won a world title in the 1,500 meters and held four world records during her dominant run.

Reflecting on her roots, Bergsma credited the local speedskating community that shaped her career. "I'm really grateful for the community we had in speedskating in High Point with Bob Byerly," she said, recalling the longtime skating coach and Rol-a-Rink owner. "The rink he had and the community he had for speedskating, it gave a lot of us an opportunity in that sport." She added, "I met my husband through speedskating. I live in the Netherlands now with him and we have two children. And I'm very happy. It actually lines up perfectly—my kids are on spring break. They brought their skates and they've been to Skateland USA here in Greensboro. So it's fun to bring them to how I grew up, where my roots began."

Eddie Pope, meanwhile, remains one of the most decorated soccer players to ever come out of North Carolina. A key figure in the U.S. Men's National Team's rise during the 1990s and early 2000s, Pope was a stalwart defender who earned 82 caps and appeared in three World Cups (1998, 2002, 2006). He also played a pivotal role in MLS, winning multiple championships and earning MLS Defender of the Year honors. Pope's induction cements his legacy as a trailblazer for soccer in the state and beyond.

Bergsma is just the second speedskater selected for the Hall, joining Greensboro's Joey Cheek. Together, she and Pope represent the very best of High Point's athletic heritage—and now, they've earned their place among North Carolina's all-time greats.
