The NFL schedule release has become its own offseason sport, and this year's AFC North smack talk came with plenty of swing-and-miss moments. The Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns both took shots at the Baltimore Ravens in their reveal videos Thursday night, but neither Ohio team landed a knockout punch.
Let's start with the Browns, who at least brought creative flair to the table. Cleveland's social media team channeled the 1990s with a full-on Street Fighter video game theme—complete with retro arcade vibes, grunge-era fashion, and a grainy camera filter that screamed 1993. The concept was undeniably clever, earning an A- for effort. But they leaned a little too hard on the nostalgia, piling on slang like "tubular" and "rad" that felt more 1980s surfer than 1990s Midwestern. By the end, it was a bit much—like they were trying too hard to be cool.
When it came to the Ravens matchups, the Browns fell back on tired clichés. Part one referenced Baltimore's mascot, Poe, while part two leaned into docks and crab traps. Destroying crabs as a jab at a city known for its seafood? That's about as predictable as a punt on fourth down. In the world of schedule release videos, originality matters, and this one missed the mark.
As for the Bengals, their offering was even more disappointing—dry, vanilla, and painfully bland. The narrator tried to land a "sick burn" by referencing the failed Maxx Crosby trade, saying, "We're division rivals, you can't back out of this one." But it came off as a big swing-and-miss, a forced attempt at rivalry heat that fizzled flat. Moving on from a deal that didn't work out isn't exactly championship-level trash talk.
In the end, the Browns at least showed some game-day energy with their concept, even if the execution stumbled. The Bengals, meanwhile, left fans wanting more—kind of like a team that needs to upgrade its playbook. For a division as fierce as the AFC North, these videos should have hit harder. Better luck next season, Ohio.
