Faith, friendship, and a relentless drive for greatness—that's the winning formula for BYU's dynamic guard duo, Delaney Gibb and Olivia Hamlin. These two aren't just teammates; they're roommates, best friends, and the heart of a Cougars squad that stormed to 26 wins this past season under head coach Lee Cummard. Together, they've become one of the most feared backcourts in the Big 12, and their bond is as tight off the court as it is on it.
"She's my roommate. I spend so much time with her. It's exhausting!" Gibb joked during a recent appearance on the "Y's Guys" livestream, her laughter infectious. "But honestly, she brings energy, joy, and happiness wherever she goes. It's super refreshing." For Hamlin, a freshman finding her rhythm in a powerhouse conference, Gibb has been the perfect mentor. "I think Delaney is one of the best leaders, not just in basketball but for anything," Hamlin said. "On the court, she plays at such a high level, and you try to lift yourself to match her. I feel like we're so close that we read each other's minds out there."
That chemistry translated into serious numbers. Gibb averaged 18.3 points per game, earning First Team All-Big 12 honors for the second straight year, while Hamlin chipped in 12.9 points and secured a spot on the Big 12 All-Freshman Team. Their standout moments? Hamlin still marvels at Gibb's career-high 37-point explosion at Utah. "All I remember is running down the court thinking, 'Delaney better shoot this ball,'" she said. "She could not miss." Gibb, meanwhile, points to Hamlin's breakout performance against Iowa State, where she came off the bench to drop 19 in the first half and finished with a game-high 23. "It was literally, 'Give Livvy the ball!'" Gibb recalled. "That was the turning point—all the pieces clicked, and she realized, 'Wow, this is so fun!'"
But for these two Cougars, basketball is just part of the story. Playing at BYU has given them a platform that extends beyond the hardwood, and they're embracing the responsibility. "Being at BYU right now, there are a lot of people who are curious," Gibb said, referencing the spotlight that comes with being part of a program that's produced big names in the sport. "We've had a lot of big players come through here, and people are watching. It matters what we do and say."
As they gear up for the next chapter—chasing an NCAA tournament berth and building on their remarkable season—Gibb and Hamlin are proving that faith, hard work, and a little laughter can go a long way. For fans of the game, this duo is one to watch, both on the court and in life.
