Benfica is pulling out all the stops to keep manager Jose Mourinho in Lisbon, as reports suggest Real Madrid is circling for a reunion with the "Special One." The Portuguese giants are set to intensify contract talks, eager to ward off growing interest from Mourinho's former employers.

Mourinho, who has one year left on his current deal, has been a transformative figure at Estadio da Luz. But with Madrid almost certain to make another managerial change this summer—especially after yet another trophyless campaign—Benfica knows it's in a race against time. The Spanish giants have struggled since Xabi Alonso was replaced by Alvaro Arbeloa, and the gap to rivals Barcelona has ballooned to 10 points with just four games left. Barça is now one win away from sealing the La Liga title, and a loss in next weekend's El Clasico could be the final blow for Arbeloa.

That search for a savior has led Madrid back to Mourinho, who previously led them to La Liga glory. But Benfica is determined to hold on. President Rui Costa has already held talks with Mourinho to map out next season, and the club is reportedly pushing to extend his stay until 2028 or 2029.

There's a catch, though: Mourinho's contract includes a €3.5 million release clause, but it's only active for ten days after the season ends. That narrow window could give Madrid a chance to strike quickly. Once it closes, any club hoping to hire him would have to negotiate directly with Benfica—a notoriously tough opponent at the bargaining table.

For now, Benfica is leaving nothing to chance. Expect talks to heat up as the season wraps up, with the club pulling out all the stops to keep one of football's most iconic managers in their dugout.
