Jose Mourinho has firmly dismissed rumors linking him with a return to Real Madrid, insisting he has had no contact with the Spanish giants despite mounting speculation about a summer move.
The 63-year-old Portuguese tactician, who famously led Los Blancos from 2010 to 2013 during a fierce rivalry with Pep Guardiola's Barcelona, is reportedly on Madrid's shortlist for a new head coach. But Mourinho, now at the helm of Benfica, was quick to shut down the chatter.
"No one from Real Madrid has spoken to me. I can guarantee that," Mourinho told reporters on Friday. "I've been in football for so many years and I'm used to these things... but there's nothing from Real Madrid."
Current Madrid boss Alvaro Arbeloa appears to be on thin ice, with the team staring at a second consecutive trophyless season. Appointed by president Florentino Perez in January to replace the short-lived Xabi Alonso, Arbeloa has struggled to steady the ship. Real Madrid trail La Liga leaders Barcelona by 11 points with just five matches remaining, and their Champions League hopes were dashed by Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals.
For Mourinho, who guided Real to the 2012 La Liga title, the focus remains squarely on his current project at Benfica. "I have a year to go on my Benfica contract, and that's all," he added, referencing his side's Champions League exit at the hands of Real Madrid in the play-off round back in February.
While the rumor mill continues to churn, Mourinho's message is clear: he's all in on Benfica—at least for now.
