Bayern Munich have issued a cautious update on Alphonso Davies' fitness ahead of the 2026 World Cup, with the club's sporting director Max Eberl revealing the Canadian star is battling to be ready for the tournament on home soil.
The Bundesliga champions are working closely with Canada Soccer to map out a recovery plan that prioritizes both the World Cup and Davies' long-term health. "Our hope is that we can all work together to do what's best for Phonzy," Eberl told reporters ahead of Bayern's final league match against Cologne.
The 25-year-old left-back, widely regarded as one of the most dynamic defenders in world football, has endured a nightmare season plagued by muscle injuries. His latest setback—a strain to the back of his left thigh—occurred after he came off the bench during Bayern's Champions League elimination by Paris Saint-Germain on May 6.
Eberl confirmed the injury will sideline Davies for "several weeks," ruling him out of both Saturday's Bundesliga finale and the German Cup final against Stuttgart on May 23. Canada, who will host all three of their group-stage matches starting with Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto on June 12, plan to announce their 26-man World Cup squad on May 29.
"It's tragic enough that he's picked up an injury ahead of the World Cup on home soil," Eberl said. "We'll all work together to ensure he might have a chance—but for that to happen, he needs to get fit. He has to accept that, and he does."
Since returning in December from a lengthy layoff due to a knee ligament tear, Davies has struggled to regain his explosive form, suffering a series of muscle setbacks that have limited his impact for both club and country. For Canada, whose World Cup campaign is a historic moment for the nation, having their talismanic fullback available would be a massive boost—but the clock is ticking fast.
