The University of Wisconsin softball team is writing one of the most thrilling stories of the Big Ten Tournament—and they're not done yet. After a dramatic walk-off win against Purdue in the opening round, the Badgers turned around and stunned No. 11 Oregon 11-9 on May 7, snapping an 0-10 all-time losing streak against the Ducks in the process.
Seeded seventh in the tournament, Wisconsin (32-8) showed no signs of intimidation against Oregon, the No. 2 seed. The Badgers launched four home runs, including a historic performance from freshman Jaclyn Showalter. The Arrowhead High School alumna crushed two homers, becoming just the third player in program history to hit multiple home runs in the Big Ten Tournament. Her 13th homer of the season also broke the program's freshman home run record, previously held by Chloe Miller since 2014.
Kaylie Whidden added a home run among her three hits, while Hilary Blomberg (Verona High School) smashed her 15th homer of the year, tying Kayla Konwent's 2019 single-season record. Emily Bojan also went deep, giving the Badgers all the firepower they needed to outlast the Ducks.
The win sets up a semifinal showdown with third-seeded UCLA on May 8 at 6:30 p.m. CT in College Park, Maryland. A victory would put Wisconsin just one win away from an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament. Top-seeded Nebraska and fourth-seeded Indiana meet in the other semifinal, with the championship game scheduled for May 9 at 3 p.m. CT. All remaining games will air on Big Ten Network.
It's been a wild ride for the Badgers, who needed a furious late rally just to reach the quarterfinals. Trailing Purdue 4-0 in the sixth inning on May 6, Showalter launched a game-tying three-run homer to flip the script. Then, in the seventh, a walk-off RBI single from Conger sent Wisconsin sprinting into the next round. Now, with momentum on their side and history in their sights, the Badgers are proving they belong on the biggest stage.
