Spain boss Luis de la Fuente is optimistic that teenage sensation Lamine Yamal will be fit for La Roja's World Cup 2026 opener against Cape Verde on June 9th, despite the Barcelona starlet missing the end of the club season with a hamstring injury.
Yamal, who has been one of the most exciting young talents in world football, has been sidelined alongside fellow winger Nico Williams, who is nursing a similar problem. However, De la Fuente is confident both will be available when it matters most.
"I think we'll have Lamine, Nico, and Mikel available for the first World Cup match, and if not, we'll have them for the second or third. It doesn't cause any major problems," De la Fuente told the media, showing a calm confidence that has become his trademark.
The Spanish manager acknowledged the pressure that late-season injuries bring, especially with the tournament just around the corner. "The injuries are putting us under pressure. Any injuries that occur now, even minor ones, are difficult to recover from. Nico's is less severe; we'll have him back in 3-4 weeks," he added.
There is speculation that Barcelona and Spain will take a cautious approach with Yamal, potentially resting him for the group stage opener to avoid any risk of relapse. Spain's other group matches are against Saudi Arabia on June 21st and Uruguay on June 27th, giving the squad some breathing room to manage fitness levels.
For fans eagerly awaiting the tournament, this news provides reassurance that Spain's dynamic attacking duo should be ready to light up the World Cup stage—a crucial factor for a team with high hopes in the competition.
