Alex Golesh shared why he is a good 'fit' as Auburn football's head coach during a recent interview with 680 The Fan in Atlanta.

When it comes to coaching hires in college athletics, the word "fit" gets thrown around a lot. We've seen it at Auburn—Hugh Freeze was considered a fit, Bryan Harsin wasn't, and yet neither delivered sustained success. But here's the twist: we rarely ask if the school fits the coach. For new Auburn head coach Alex Golesh, the answer is a resounding yes.

During a recent interview on The Locker Room at 680 The Fan in Atlanta, Golesh opened up about why Auburn feels like home. "I can tell you six months in, this Auburn job fits me, and I thought that taking it," he shared. The key? Auburn's blue-collar approach to football. That's the foundation this program was built on, and it's the same grit that defines Golesh's own journey.

Speaking of journeys, Golesh's path to the Plains is a masterclass in hard work and perseverance. He started as a defensive line coach at Westerville Central High School in Ohio, then worked his way up as a student assistant at Ohio State. From there, it was graduate assistant stints at Northern Illinois and Oklahoma State, followed by position coach and recruiting coordinator roles at Toledo, Illinois, and Iowa State. His big break came alongside Josh Heupel at UCF and Tennessee, before he took the reins at South Florida.

And what a turnaround he orchestrated there. Before Golesh arrived, USF was in a brutal stretch—just 4-29 over three seasons. In three years under his leadership, the Bulls went 23-15, including a nine-win season in 2025. That's the kind of rebuild Auburn fans are hoping to see on the Plains.

Getting the Tigers back to the top of the SEC won't be easy. But if there's one thing Golesh has proven, it's that a blue-collar work ethic can make the impossible possible. For Auburn, that might just be the perfect fit.
