HILLSDALE, MI — The Hillsdale Hornets made a statement at the LCAA track and field championships, with one senior rewriting the record books and setting the stage for a thrilling postseason run. Ashton Thornsbury delivered a performance to remember, capturing two league titles and etching his name into school history.
Thornsbury blazed to victory in the 110-meter hurdles, crossing the line in 14.89 seconds to set a new Hillsdale school record. The senior wasn't done there, adding an LCAA championship in the high jump with a personal-best leap of 6 feet, 5 inches. He also impressed in the 300-meter hurdles, taking third with a personal-best time of 41.29 seconds.
"Honestly, it feels good," Thornsbury said of the record. "I did not expect to break it today at all. I was just trying to early qualify coming off a high jump and then going straight into it. But it feels good. And then regionals, I hope to re-break it. And then place, obviously, in regionals and do good there."
The Hornets showcased depth across multiple events. Logan Youngman claimed first in the 1,600-meter run with a personal-best 4:36.08, running alongside his younger brother Bryce Youngman. Logan also finished seventh in the 3,200, fourth in the 800, and fourth in the 4x800 relay, a demanding schedule that will serve as valuable preparation for the postseason.
"This was more of a preparation for the team state because none of us have done four events," Youngman said. "I've never done four events this year, so it was just an overall preparation for that."
The Hornets now turn their attention to the MITCA D3 championships in Manton, where they'll look to build on their LCAA success. As the competition heats up, Hillsdale's athletes are proving they have the speed, strength, and determination to make noise at the next level.
