A Premier League panel has voted 3-2 that Arsenal defender Gabriel should have been sent off for his alleged headbutt on Erling Haaland in last month's game at Manchester City

In a dramatic twist that has reignited debate over Premier League officiating, Arsenal defender Gabriel has been told he should have been sent off for a headbutt on Manchester City's Erling Haaland during last month's fiery 2-1 defeat at the Etihad Stadium.

The Brazilian center-back escaped with just a yellow card after appearing to thrust his head toward the Norwegian striker in a heated moment. Neither referee Anthony Taylor nor VAR official John Brooks saw it as a red-card offense at the time, with Brooks ruling the incident was "not excessively aggressive or violent." But now, the Premier League's Key Match Incidents panel has spoken—and the verdict is split.

By a 3-2 vote, the panel determined that Gabriel's "extra head movement forward" should have been classified as violent conduct, warranting an automatic dismissal. However, in a twist that will frustrate Arsenal fans, the same panel voted 4-1 against VAR intervention, meaning the on-field decision stands as a learning moment rather than a retroactive punishment.

Had Gabriel been sent off, he would have faced a three-match ban for violent conduct, which would have sidelined him for the Gunners' victory over Newcastle United, as well as upcoming clashes with Fulham and West Ham. Given Arsenal's defensive solidity this season, that would have been a significant blow.

For his part, Haaland—who scored the winning goal in that match—offered a wry take on the incident afterward. Speaking to Sky Sports, the City striker said: "I think it's always like this. A lot of fighting and these kind of things. If I fell on the floor there, which I will not do, maybe it's a different story." He added: "Of course, I scored the goal. I won that battle in the decisive moment."

The incident serves as a reminder that in the heat of a top-of-the-table clash, even the smallest movement can have major consequences. For Arsenal, it's a lucky escape—but one that will leave fans wondering what might have been if the whistle had blown just a little differently.
