Colts GM Chris Ballard admits he underestimated this aspect of QB Daniel Jones' game

When Colts general manager Chris Ballard joined The Rich Eisen Show recently, he made a candid admission about quarterback Daniel Jones that caught many by surprise. Ballard revealed that he may have initially sold Jones short—particularly when it came to one key aspect of his game.

"I probably underestimated his accuracy coming in the door," Ballard admitted. "This dude is accurate now, and when he's in rhythm and really in a groove, he is excellent."

Ballard went on to compare Jones to a familiar face from his past: former Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith. "We had Alex Smith in Kansas City; they're a lot alike, how they prepare for the game, how steady they are day-to-day. There were a lot of similarities," Ballard noted.

The GM emphasized that scouting a player from afar is one thing, but living with him day in and day out is another entirely. "Until you live with somebody, you don't know them. Seeing his consistency, seeing him not get too high or too low—all of those things bode well for the Colts and his future."

Jones, who signed a two-year, $88 million extension with Indianapolis in March, completed 64.1% of his passes during his six seasons with the New York Giants. He posted a career-high 68.0% completion rate last year before suffering a season-ending torn Achilles in Week 14 against Jacksonville. Both Jones and the Colts expect the 28-year-old to be ready for the regular season opener.

For a quarterback who has faced plenty of scrutiny throughout his career, this vote of confidence from his new GM speaks volumes. And for Colts fans, hearing that their signal-caller brings both elite preparation and surprising accuracy to the huddle is exactly the kind of news that makes game day feel a little closer. Whether you're suiting up for Sunday or just cheering from the stands, there's something inspiring about a player proving the doubters wrong—one accurate throw at a time.
