The Arizona Wildcats are tapping into a proven pipeline, securing a commitment from former North Carolina guard Derek Dixon. This marks the second transfer pickup for Arizona on Monday, following ex-Washington guard JJ Mandaquit, as head coach Tommy Lloyd aggressively reloads his backcourt.
Dixon, a 6-foot-5 guard, brings valuable experience from a premier program. As a freshman for the Tar Heels in 2025-26, he played in 33 games with 16 starts, averaging 6.5 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 2.7 assists. His shooting touch is a major asset, having connected on 39.7% from three-point range and 81.8% from the free-throw line.
He showed flashes of high-level scoring ability, reaching double figures seven times. His career-high 17-point performance came in the heated rivalry game at Duke, where he sank five three-pointers. Dixon also contributed 11 points, five rebounds, and six assists in UNC's NCAA Tournament first-round game.
His arrival is timely for a Wildcats squad facing the significant departure of Big 12 Player of the Year Jaden Bradley. Dixon and Mandaquit will join a backcourt that includes incoming five-star freshman Caleb Holt and redshirt freshman Bryce James, signaling a dynamic and competitive guard rotation is taking shape in Tucson.
This move continues a notable exchange of talent between the two blue-blood programs. Arizona fans will hope Dixon follows the path of Caleb Love, who transferred from UNC to Arizona in 2023-24 and promptly won Pac-12 Player of the Year, proving this particular pipeline can produce electric results.
