Real Madrid head coach Alvaro Arbeloa says he would be pleased if Jose Mourinho replaces him and leads the club next season.

Real Madrid's interim head coach Álvaro Arbeloa has openly welcomed the possibility of José Mourinho returning to the Santiago Bernabéu next season, setting the stage for a potentially seismic shift in the club's dugout.

Speaking ahead of Sunday's La Liga clash with Sevilla, Arbeloa didn't mince words about his admiration for the Portuguese tactician. "For me, as a former Madrid player and as a Madridista, José Mourinho is number one. He's one of ours," Arbeloa said. "If he comes back next year, I'll be very happy to see him back home."

Mourinho, now 63, is reportedly in the final stages of negotiations to take the reins at Real Madrid for a second time—13 years after his first, trophy-laden spell. The "Special One" only joined Benfica last September on a two-year deal, but Real president Florentino Pérez is eager to bring him back to the Spanish capital, where he famously broke Barcelona's domestic stranglehold in 2012.

Arbeloa stepped into the hot seat in January following Xabi Alonso's departure, but the season has ended without silverware for the second consecutive year—a drought that has left the Bernabéu faithful restless. The club's struggles have been compounded by tension surrounding star forward Kylian Mbappé, who was left out of the starting lineup for Thursday's 2-0 win over Real Oviedo.

The French World Cup winner, who had missed two previous games—including last weekend's title-deciding El Clásico loss to Barcelona—with a thigh injury, was audibly whistled by his own fans when he came off the bench. An online petition calling for "Mbappé Out" has since garnered tens of millions of signatures, casting a shadow over his commitment to the club.

But Arbeloa, a former Real Madrid defender who knows the pressure of the white jersey, was quick to downplay the incident. "I've just bumped into him, I told him to stay calm. I understand that these kinds of things make headlines, but it's something much more normal than you think," he said. "I used to be a player, I know what they can feel in these situations—playing every day, then playing less or not at all. I totally understand that Kylian wasn't happy about not playing on Thursday, and I like that. I wouldn't understand it if he didn't want to play. My relationship with him remains the same."

As Madridistas gear up for what could be a dramatic summer, the prospect of Mourinho's return—an iron fist for a broken team—adds another layer of intrigue to a club that thrives on high drama, both on and off the pitch.
