When the Portland Trail Blazers acquired Jrue Holiday in the Damian Lillard blockbuster, the basketball world knew it was a short-term play. But with Lillard now expected back and rookie sensation Scoot Henderson waiting in the wings, one anonymous NBA scout offers a candid take on Holiday's evolving role in the Pacific Northwest.

"You're locked in. That's a lot of money," the scout said, referencing Holiday's hefty contract. "I don't think he's valued at that number anymore. And you've got two more years of it. Obviously, he got overpaid because Boston won the championship and he was valued high. But it's not like he performed like a $35 million player."

The scout isn't questioning Holiday's talent—the 14-year veteran remains one of the league's premier two-way guards, a defensive stalwart who can run an offense and knock down big shots. But at 33 years old and with two years and roughly $70 million remaining on his deal, the math gets tricky for a Blazers team prioritizing youth and development.

"I like him. I just think, 'How are you going to use him moving forward? Dame is coming back and you have Scoot,'" the scout continued. "I will say, Jrue's best value right now, if I was in the organization, is trying to teach Scoot the point guard position."

That mentorship angle could be the key to unlocking Holiday's true worth in Portland. The scout sees an invaluable resource for the No. 3 overall pick, who has all the physical tools but needs polish and experience to reach his ceiling.

"To me, in addition to what he does on the court, Jrue should be a mentor to Scoot. He's a true professional. He works his butt off. He handles himself on and off the court. He's someone every young player should look up to. He's also a very good, two-way player. If Scoot can take any knowledge from anyone, that's the guy I would take the knowledge from."

For a Blazers team in transition, Holiday's leadership could be just as valuable as his on-court production. The scout believes this dual role—contributor and teacher—might be the only way to justify that massive contract.

"Jrue, just being a leader and being who he is, I think that will help offset his age and that contract. If he can add that piece of it and be a mentor to Scoot, that's a big positive."

Whether Holiday embraces that role or the Blazers eventually move him for assets remains to be seen. But for now, the former champion's biggest impact might come in the film room and practice court, shaping the next generation of Portland's backcourt.
