Angels' rough week leads to their nosedive in latest power rankings

Only one win last week has not helped the Halos.

The Los Angeles Angels entered the 2026 season with tempered expectations, still haunted by their last postseason appearance in 2014. But after showing signs of life, a brutal week has sent them spiraling down the latest MLB power rankings.

Mike Trout has been a bright spot, looking sharp at the plate with an OPS flirting near 1.000. The pitching staff has also benefited from Jose Soriano's strong start. The Halos were beginning to claw back in the division race—until last week derailed their momentum.

It was a disastrous stretch: first, a sweep at the hands of the Chicago White Sox, followed by taking just one game from the New York Mets in a three-game set. The sting comes not just from the losses, but from the opponents. The White Sox, even with star Munetaka Murakami, shouldn't be sweeping anyone. And the Mets? They own the worst record in baseball at 12-22.

Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller took notice, dropping the Angels from No. 26 to No. 29 in his latest power rankings. "Mike Trout reached base safely in 14 of his 26 plate appearances... Fat lot of good it did the Halos, though, as they dropped five of six games and now sit dead-last in the American League standings," Miller wrote. "They were always likely to be sellers at the trade deadline, but getting swept by the White Sox seems to have all but sealed that fate."

But it's not over yet. The Angels sit just 5.5 games out of first place in a division that looks wide open this year. With time still on the clock, turning this ship around is possible—but they'll need to find their footing fast.
