The first female trainer to win the Kentucky Derby isn't sure she'll chase the second jewel in the Triple Crown. Here's what will determine it.

History was made at Churchill Downs on May 2, when Golden Tempo crossed the finish line a neck ahead of Renegade to win the Kentucky Derby. But the victory wasn't just about the horse—it was also a landmark moment for trainer Cherie DeVaux, who became the first female trainer ever to win the Run for the Roses.

Now, the question on every racing fan's mind is whether Golden Tempo will go for the Triple Crown. The Preakness Stakes, the second jewel in the series, is set for May 16 at Laurel Park in Maryland, with the field being finalized on May 11. That gives DeVaux just over a week to make a call that could define her colt's legacy.

Speaking the day after her historic win, DeVaux was measured but optimistic. "Obviously this race is in two weeks," she said. "It's a lot different than what he's done. He's a horse who has a lot of constitution to him. He can handle something like that. But if one day he just doesn't look like he's in tiptop shape, then we'll pivot and come up with another plan."

Golden Tempo has already shipped back to DeVaux's home base at Keeneland in Lexington, Kentucky, where his recovery and overall condition over the next several days will be the deciding factor. Meanwhile, Derby runner-up Renegade will not be joining him in Maryland—trainer Todd Pletcher has confirmed the colt is headed to Saratoga, with sights set on the Belmont Stakes on June 6.

For fans following the Triple Crown chase, this is the kind of drama that makes horse racing so compelling. Whether Golden Tempo runs at Pimlico or waits for another spot, one thing is certain: this filly's trainer knows how to write history.
