The Miami RedHawks are making moves, and the latest addition to their coaching staff brings a familiar name and a wealth of basketball experience to Oxford. Head coach Travis Steele announced the hiring of Andrew Dakich as an assistant coach, and for fans of the game, that last name might ring a bell.
Andrew is the son of legendary sportscaster and former coach Dan Dakich, who played under Bob Knight at Indiana and later served as head coach at Bowling Green. With that kind of pedigree, it's no surprise Andrew has carved out an impressive coaching path of his own. Before joining Miami, he spent four seasons on the staff at Illinois State, where the Redbirds made serious noise. Under his watch, the team matched or improved its win total every year, culminating in a 23-13 record and a 12-8 mark in the Missouri Valley Conference last season—their best since 2016-17. Illinois State also notched multiple Quad 1 wins for the first time in program history and posted back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time since 2010.
But Dakich's journey to Miami started long before that. He played his college ball at Michigan before transferring to Ohio State as a graduate senior, where he appeared in all 34 games under Chris Holtmann, averaging 19 minutes per contest and dishing out 72 assists. That Buckeye squad rolled to 25 wins, a 15-3 record in Big Ten play, and a trip to the NCAA Tournament's Round of 32. After his playing days, Dakich spent time as a grad assistant and program assistant at Ohio State before serving as director of basketball operations at Elon for two seasons.
"I am excited to add Andrew to our program," Steele said. "I have known Andrew for a very long time. He has a terrific basketball pedigree from his playing days at Michigan and Ohio State, along with his coaching career at Elon and Illinois State. Andrew has an extensive player-development pedigree, specifically with guards. He also has a reputation for being a very good offensive coach. He will have a huge impact on our student-athletes here at Miami."
For a RedHawks program looking to build momentum, Dakich's track record with guard development and offensive schemes could be a game-changer. Whether you're a die-hard Miami fan or just love following the next generation of coaching talent, this is a hire worth watching. Welcome to Oxford, Coach Dakich!
