When you score 30 goals and rack up 66 points in a single season, the bar gets set sky-high. For Washington Capitals winger Aliaksei Protas, that breakout 2024-25 campaign made him one of the league's most dangerous 5-on-5 threats. But this past season? The big Belarusian admits things just didn't click the same way.
"It went completely different from last year," Protas said candidly from Arlington, Virginia. "Everything was going our way — bounces, confidence, everything. This year, it felt like the complete opposite."
Through 76 games, Protas still posted respectable numbers: 25 goals, 27 assists, and 52 points with a plus-20 rating. He also logged a career-high 18:14 minutes per game. But for a player who had emerged as a force at even strength, the dip in production stung — especially as the Capitals found themselves on the outside of the playoff picture.
Injuries to key teammates like Pierre-Luc Dubois and Tom Wilson forced Protas to bounce around the lineup, disrupting his rhythm. He never used those challenges as an excuse, but the impact was clear. "I got a little more chances, but I created less for my teammates and didn't create enough for myself," he explained. "It's not a terrible year, but I know I can show way more than I did."
Now, with the offseason ahead, Protas is laser-focused on evolution. At 6-foot-6 and 225 pounds, he's already a physical presence on the ice. But his goal this summer is to get lighter, faster, and more explosive — especially in tight spaces where the game's toughest battles are won.
"It's not easy for a big guy to improve his skating, but I'll try my best," Protas said. "I want to be quicker, more agile, and prove what I can really do."
For Caps fans, that's exactly the kind of mindset that turns a good season into a great career. And for anyone hitting the ice this summer, whether you're chasing the net or chasing your potential, remember: the work you put in now sets the tone for the season ahead. Stay light, stay fast, and never stop proving yourself.
