Chelsea fans, get ready for some much-needed good news ahead of Monday's Premier League clash against Nottingham Forest at Stamford Bridge. The Blues are pushing hard for a UEFA Champions League spot, and they might just get a double boost in defense just in time for the showdown.
Interim manager Calum McFarlane delivered an optimistic update during Friday's press conference at the training ground. First up, captain Reece James is back in first-team training after recovering from a hamstring injury that's kept him out since March. That's seven games across all competitions he's missed—so his return is a huge lift for the squad's leadership and stability on the pitch.
But that's not all. McFarlane also confirmed that Levi Colwill has been "looking good." The young defender made his long-awaited comeback last weekend with a standout performance for Chelsea's Under-21 side, helping them secure a 1-0 win over Middlesbrough in the Premier League 2 play-offs. Colwill has been sidelined since the start of pre-season with an anterior cruciate ligament injury, so seeing him back in action is a major milestone.
"Reece is back in training and Levi, both looking good," McFarlane said. "A little way to the game, so we'll see how they do, but both are looking promising. We're taking it day by day. Levi has had a long injury. Reece had a really good run and was then injured again, so we don't want to push too much."
Even while sidelined, James has remained a key figure in the locker room. McFarlane praised the young captain's influence: "Reece has been brilliant since the day I stepped up in January. He's been injured, so it's a different role. Even though he's young, he's experienced and won major tournaments. He's a massive part of the leadership group and he's been a massive help to me and the staff."
McFarlane kicked off his second stint as interim head coach with a victory over Leeds United in the FA Cup semi-final—the Blues' first win in nearly a month. With Nottingham Forest visiting on Monday, having James and Colwill available could be just the spark Chelsea needs to keep their Champions League hopes alive.
