Eintracht Frankfurt head coach Albert Riera has fired back at reports of a rift with forward Jonathan Burkardt, delivering a passionate outburst at Friday's press conference ahead of the Bundesliga clash with Hamburg.
The drama unfolded after German outlet BILD reported on Thursday that tensions were simmering between the Spanish manager and the 26-year-old striker. According to the report, Riera had voiced concerns over Burkardt's body fat percentage during a conversation with Jan Fießer—a discussion that reportedly left the forward frustrated.
Burkardt then sought counsel from his agent, who subsequently reached out to Frankfurt sporting director Markus Krösche. Krösche, in turn, had a "serious talk" with Riera to get to the bottom of the situation. The report claims Riera snapped at Burkardt as he walked past, blaming the player for prompting the sporting director's intervention.
But when a journalist raised the issue at Friday's press conference, Riera didn't hold back. "It's total bull****," he said bluntly. "Do you think I have a communication problem with my players? Do you really think that?"
"This is not a bar or a circus; it's a very serious, professional football club," Riera continued, his voice rising. "Our loyal fans, who love this club, deserve to know the truth—I will not accept lies. There's nothing bad, it's just not true. I am protecting my players, it's a young group."
The heated exchange adds an extra layer of intrigue to Frankfurt's upcoming match, with all eyes now on how the squad—and Burkardt—will respond on the pitch.
