In the world of high school baseball, sometimes the biggest plays come from the most unexpected places. For Norco High's baseball program, that play didn't happen on the diamond—it happened on social media, and it was made by a 14-year-old freshman.

Dylan Seward, the Cougars' slick-fielding, switch-hitting shortstop, is already turning heads as one of the top prospects in the class of 2027. But before he ever made a highlight-reel grab or a game-saving throw, he made a save that would define Norco's rise to national prominence.

In the summer of 2024, Seward learned that veteran head coach Gary Parcell—a man who had dedicated over 35 years to the program—was being pushed out by school administration. While many parents and players hesitated to speak out, fearing retribution, Seward took a courageous stand.

"I have always been advised by my parents to be mindful of what I post online as it may offend others, affect my reputation or baseball career," Seward wrote in a now-famous social media post. "However, after much thought and guidance, I write this post today to express my disappointment with the athletic director and principal at Norco High's decision to fire coach Gary Parcell."

Though Parcell was never officially fired, he was being pressured to retire. Seward's heartfelt words rallied the Cougar community—former players, parents, and fans alike—who came to Parcell's defense with unwavering support.

"This wasn't just a job or coaching role for him, it was much more," Seward continued. "He was a teacher and mentor to many generations of young men that came through Norco. He taught us how to play the game with integrity, accountability and respect not only for our team but others as well."

The freshman shortstop also acknowledged the controversy surrounding his own promotion to varsity as a starter. "Thank you for giving me the chance to start on varsity as a freshman even though I know it wasn't the most popular decision," he wrote, referencing the resistance from some upperclassmen. "The thought of you departing this way is horrible."

Seward's bold move paid off. Parcell was reinstated, and the program rallied behind their leader. Now, as Norco enters the 2025 season ranked No. 1, it's clear that the biggest save of the year didn't come from a pitcher's mound—it came from a shortstop who refused to stay silent.
