In a thrilling showdown at The Joie Stadium on Sunday, Manchester City boss Andrée Jeglertz couldn't hide his delight after a dramatic late winner against Liverpool. The 1-0 victory, sealed by Rebecca Knaak’s 91st-minute header, not only showcased City’s relentless spirit but also put them within touching distance of the Barclays Women’s Super League title.
"It was a tough game, but I think that says something about this group," Jeglertz said, reflecting on the nail-biter. "Even if there are parts where we struggle a little bit, we find a way to win. Liverpool might be difficult for us, but finding a way to win is something we talked about earlier this year. It shows something about the group—that no matter what, we never give up and keep going, believe and trust what we’re doing. We got over the line in the end, so that’s nice."
The victory was made even more poignant by the announcement from midfielder Laura Coombs that she will retire from football at the end of the season. Jeglertz took a moment to honor her legacy, calling her an "amazing person" whose positive influence has shaped the team's culture. "She makes sure that everybody is seen and heard in the group," he noted. "That is one thing about culture and about how she is. The other thing, of course, she’s a great player. You can put her wherever you want on the field—you can play her almost everywhere. Also, she always has the right attitude to train and do her best in everything she’s doing. You will lose that kind of mentality and personality. She affects so many other players by that personality."
With just two games left before the summer break, Jeglertz is already looking ahead. "I believe so much in the players, what we’re doing, how we are believing in the process and believing in each other," he said. "I always feel that there are parts where we can improve. We need to make sure that we don’t concede any goals because we will create chances at the other end. We will do that with this group."
For Manchester City fans, this victory is a testament to the team’s never-say-die attitude—a quality that could very well carry them to the title.
