After an illustrious Iowa wrestling career, three-time All-American Drake Ayala is reportedly joining Iowa State's coaching staff.

In a move that's sending shockwaves through the Iowa wrestling scene, three-time All-American Drake Ayala is trading black and gold for cardinal and gold. After an outstanding five-year career with the Hawkeyes, Ayala has reportedly accepted a position on Iowa State's coaching staff for the upcoming season.

The news, first reported by Pat Mineo of The Wrestling Room, marks a significant addition to first-time head coach Brent Metcalf's staff. Ayala, a Fort Dodge native, brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of excellence to the Cyclones' program.

During his tenure at Iowa, Ayala compiled an impressive 83-26 record, including a 34-13 mark in dual meets. He was a force on the national stage, finishing as the NCAA runner-up at 125 pounds in 2024 and again at 133 pounds in 2025. His consistency and grit earned him All-American honors three times, solidifying his place among the sport's elite.

Reflecting on his final season, Ayala shared an emotional farewell. "It's bittersweet," he said after a fifth-place finish. "My last time on the mat, you know? It was fun. It has been a roller coaster of a year, as you guys know. I know I didn't get what I wanted – and never did – but I learned a lot, I grew as a man and I'm proud of myself."

Ayala now joins a program on the rise under Metcalf, who was recently named Iowa State's ninth head wrestling coach after eight seasons as a full-time assistant and one as a volunteer assistant. Metcalf spoke passionately about the opportunity ahead. "I am excited and honored to be the next Head Wrestling Coach at Iowa State University," he said. "None of this would be possible without the vision and mentorship of Kevin Dresser, who for the previous nine seasons has continued to raise the standard of what it means to be a Cyclone wrestler."

Metcalf added, "As we move to the next chapter we must continue to raise that bar. We will challenge our team to pursue National, World and Olympic Titles, compete fearlessly, and to be outstanding representatives of this university."

For fans of Iowa wrestling, this is a storyline worth watching. From battling in Carver-Hawkeye Arena to developing talent in Ames, Ayala's transition from rival to coach adds an intriguing new chapter to one of the sport's most passionate rivalries. Whether you're a Hawkeye or a Cyclone, one thing is clear: the future of Iowa wrestling just got a whole lot more interesting.
