The Philadelphia 76ers are making a major front-office shift, parting ways with president of basketball operations Daryl Morey after six seasons at the helm. According to ESPN's Shams Charania, head coach Nick Nurse will return for a fourth season, while the organization begins its search for a new basketball operations leader.
Morey's tenure in Philly was defined by bold moves and high expectations, but ultimately fell short of championship glory. The Sixers reached the postseason five times under his watch but never advanced past the second round. This season, the team finished 45-37 as the No. 7 seed, battled through the Play-In Tournament, and pulled off a thrilling seven-game first-round upset over the Boston Celtics—rallying from a 3-1 deficit. However, their playoff run ended abruptly with a sweep at the hands of the New York Knicks. Just two days after that series concluded, Morey met with team owners Josh Harris and David Blitzer and was let go.
During his time in Philadelphia, Morey swung for the fences. He engineered the blockbuster trade sending Ben Simmons to Brooklyn for James Harden, later flipped Harden to the Los Angeles Clippers, and signed Paul George to a max free-agent deal in the summer of 2024. He brought in Doc Rivers as head coach in 2020 before switching to Nurse in 2023. While critics may point to roster depth issues, there's no denying Morey took aggressive steps to push the Sixers toward a conference finals appearance—something that ultimately proved elusive.
A major factor in the team's struggles was health. Joel Embiid, the 2023 NBA MVP, has been plagued by injuries, playing just 96 total regular-season games over the past three years. That instability made it nearly impossible for the roster Morey assembled to build sustained momentum.
Now, the next front-office leader will inherit a core centered around Embiid, George, and a promising young backcourt featuring All-Star Tyrese Maxey and rookie standout VJ Edgecombe, who finished third in Rookie of the Year voting this season. Bob Myers—the architect behind four Golden State Warriors championships as president and general manager—will lead the search for Morey's replacement and oversee basketball operations in the interim, per ESPN.
As for Nurse, he brings a championship pedigree from his time with the Toronto Raptors, though his tenure in Philadelphia has been rocky at 116-130 over three seasons, including a tough 24-58 campaign during the injury-plagued 2024-25 season. With a new decision-maker coming in, all eyes will be on how the Sixers retool around their star talent for the seasons ahead.
