The San Francisco 49ers are fortifying their defensive backfield ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft, adding another veteran piece to the puzzle. The team has signed free-agent cornerback Jack Jones to a one-year contract, as reported by NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

This move comes on the heels of the 49ers' earlier signing of Nate Hobbs, signaling a clear intent to build experienced depth in the secondary. Jones, 28, is coming off a season where he started all 17 games for the Miami Dolphins, showcasing his durability and consistency. Last year, he racked up 77 combined tackles, defended six passes, and forced two fumbles.

Jones brings a proven track record and a playmaking pedigree to the Bay Area. Over his career, which includes stints with the Patriots, Raiders, and Dolphins, he has tallied eight interceptions—an impressive four of which he returned for touchdowns. His familiarity with new teammate Nate Hobbs, from their time together with the Las Vegas Raiders, should help him integrate quickly into the defensive scheme.

While cornerback wasn't the 49ers' most glaring need, the addition of Jones creates a formidable and experienced unit. He joins a group led by Deommodore Lenoir and Renardo Green, alongside Hobbs and Upton Stout. With five established veterans now on the roster, the Niners have the flexibility to approach the draft strategically, potentially focusing on other areas unless a truly special prospect falls to them.

For 49ers fans, this signing is about building a resilient and deep defense capable of contending. Adding a battle-tested player like Jack Jones provides crucial insurance and competition, ensuring the secondary remains a strength as the team prepares for another run.
