Apr. 10—MITCHELL — The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team won a program-record 34 games last season. In college sports, a coaching change can often spell disaster. When a successful coach departs, it frequently triggers a player exodus, derailing a program's momentum. The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team faced exactly that scenario after a record-breaking 2023 season. After winning a program-best 34 games, head coach Tommy Downs left for the University of Sioux Falls, leaving the Tigers' future uncertain.

Yet, the 2024 season has told a different story—one of resilience and team-first culture. Instead of fracturing, the core of the team held firm. Nine of DWU's top twelve hitters and all three of their leading pitchers returned, with no transfers out. This continuity has provided a rock-solid foundation for first-year head coach Stephen Oswald Jr.

The results speak for themselves. The Tigers are soaring with a 28-11 overall record and a dominant 11-1 mark in the Great Plains Athletic Conference, riding a ten-game winning streak. This success isn't a coincidence; it's a direct result of the tight-knit culture the players built and maintained.

"It's no credit to me, truthfully," Oswald admitted, crediting the team's veteran leadership. "The older players talked to the incoming recruits and everybody said, 'Hey, we want to stay together as a team.' They already loved each other that much as a family... They want to be here."

Star pitcher Alison Ernsberger echoed that sentiment, revealing the team's unified mindset during the transition. "We were just thinking the whole time, 'Well, it doesn't really matter who our next coach is because we know that we're so close,'" she said. The players assured Oswald that the team's chemistry was already a strength, allowing them to "pick it up right there and go forward."

Oswald, a first-time head coach, stepped into an enviable situation: a talented roster with a pre-established winning culture. The Tigers' story is a powerful reminder that while coaches provide direction, it's the players' commitment to each other that truly drives a team's legacy forward. Their unity has turned potential upheaval into another chapter of success.
