'Huge game of ludo' - Hoffenheim await twist in Champions League race

Hoffenheim coach Christian Ilzer expects a "huge game of ludo" as the Bundesliga concludes on Saturday with his side one of three looking to snatch a Champions League spot in a dramatic finale. Champions Bayern Munich, second-placed Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig in third have already secured their passage to next season's league phase of Europe's top club competition.

The Bundesliga curtain closes on Saturday with a dramatic finale that Hoffenheim coach Christian Ilzer aptly describes as a "huge game of ludo." His side is one of three teams locked in a tense battle for the final Champions League spot, making for a must-watch showdown.

Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, and RB Leipzig have already secured their tickets to Europe's elite competition, leaving VfB Stuttgart, Hoffenheim, and Bayer Leverkusen to fight for the remaining automatic qualification place. Freiburg could also sneak in if they win the Europa League final next Wednesday.

Hoffenheim travels to Borussia Mönchengladbach level on points with fourth-placed Stuttgart but trailing by five goals on goal difference. Leverkusen sits three points behind and hosts Hamburg SV. Meanwhile, Stuttgart faces a tricky trip to Eintracht Frankfurt, who are still chasing a Conference League berth.

"We go into the final game with a lot of confidence," Ilzer told reporters on Friday. "The aim is never to play in a final; the aim is always to win a final. Our mission is coming to an end, and we want to squeeze everything possible out just one last time."

It's a remarkable turnaround for Hoffenheim, who were relegation candidates last season. Under Austrian coach Ilzer, shrewd recruitment and smart management have transformed the south-west club into a side with a genuine shot at returning to the Champions League for the first time since 2018.

"It's like a huge game of ludo," Ilzer added. "Three clubs already have all their pieces home. Now we are sitting at a table with Leverkusen and Stuttgart for the last Champions League place. Tomorrow comes the final throw, and after 90 minutes, the die will have been cast. But regardless of the result, it's an incredibly successful season for Hoffenheim. Of course, someone will keep an eye on results elsewhere, but we have to focus on what we can control."
