Zach Ertz: I don't want torn ACL to be my last play

A report in February indicated that tight end Zach Ertz wants to play in 2026 and Ertz has confirmed that his plan is to return for a 14th NFL season.

Zach Ertz isn't ready for the final whistle. The veteran tight end, whose 2023 season with the Washington Commanders ended abruptly with a torn ACL in Week 13, has confirmed his intention to return for a 14th NFL campaign, aiming to prove he still has plenty left in the tank.

For a three-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl LII hero, the prospect of a devastating injury being his last play is simply unacceptable. "I don’t want it to be the last play that I have," Ertz stated. "When people think of my career and that last play, I don’t want that to be the conversation starter."

Ertz is currently deep into rehabilitation, targeting a return in time for training camp. He believes he was playing some of his best football before the injury, a claim backed by his immediate impact in Washington prior to going down. Now a free agent, his mission is twofold: to regain his peak physical form and to convince a team he can still be a dynamic weapon in the passing game.

While the NFL is a young man's league, Ertz's proven track record as a reliable target and savvy route-runner makes him a compelling low-risk, high-reward addition. As he navigates free agency with "eyes wide open," expect a contending team in need of veteran leadership and red-zone prowess to give this accomplished pass-catcher a chance to write a proper final chapter to his illustrious career.
