Japanese figure skating star Yuma Kagiyama, a two-time Olympic silver medalist, has announced he will take a step back from competition for the upcoming 2026-27 season. The 22-year-old, who claimed individual and team silver at both the 2022 Beijing and 2026 Milan Games, is choosing to pause his competitive journey to refocus and explore new challenges within the sport.
In a social media statement, Kagiyama expressed his desire to use this time for reflection and rediscovery. "Looking ahead, I'd like to spend that time rediscovering the appeal of figure skating alongside new challenges, reflecting on myself, and taking it all in," he shared. He reassured fans that he will remain active through ice shows and events, stating, "I'm excited for the chance to appear before you all again!"
Kagiyama has been a model of consistency at the highest level. Since his senior debut, he has remarkably stood on the podium at every international event he has entered. His trophy case includes World Championship silver medals from 2021, 2022, 2024, and 2025, finishing behind legends like Nathan Chen, Shoma Uno, and the current champion, Ilia Malinin. His career was only briefly interrupted by an injury that sidelined him for most of the 2022-23 season.
This hiatus means Kagiyama will not be part of the Grand Prix Series starting this October, leaving the international field open for other contenders. His decision highlights the immense physical and mental demands of elite figure skating, where athletes often seek periods of renewal to extend their careers and passion for performance. Fans will undoubtedly await his return, hoping to see the refined artistry and technical prowess that have made him a perennial medal threat on the global stage.
