In a thrilling display of resilience, the Columbia Falls Wildcats orchestrated a stunning comeback to defeat Flathead 10-9 on Tuesday, with Nico Young delivering the game-winning single in the seventh inning.
The Braves (7-11) seemed in control after Hunter Fann's sacrifice fly in the fifth inning stretched their lead to 9-4. But the Wildcats (12-4) refused to back down, igniting a rally that showcased the heart of a true contender.
The comeback began when Jett Pitts scored on a wild pitch in the fifth, cutting the deficit to 9-5. Then, in the sixth inning, Pitts delivered a bases-clearing single that brought the Wildcats within one run at 9-8. Tristan Victor followed with a double, scoring Pitts from second to level the score and set the stage for a dramatic finish.
With two outs in the seventh, Young stepped to the plate and smashed a hard grounder to right field, sending Caden Fisher home from second to seal the walk-off victory and send the home crowd into a frenzy.
Micah Engle was a standout for Flathead, driving in three runs with a 1-for-4 performance, including a three-run double that highlighted an eight-run fourth inning. Greyson Smith pitched 4 1/3 innings for the Braves, allowing five runs on five hits, while Tyson Franchini-White contributed 2 1/3 innings of relief.
For Columbia Falls, Lincoln Fisher worked 3 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on six hits, before Zeke Dunn took over and delivered 3 1/3 stellar innings, striking out seven batters to keep the Wildcats within striking distance.
