Tatsuro Taira is stepping into the Octagon at UFC 328 with more than just championship gold on his mind. When he faces flyweight champion Joshua Van at the Prudential Center in Newark, he's carrying the hopes of an entire nation on his shoulders.
Before the main event showdown between Sean Strickland and Khamzat Chimaev, Taira will get his shot at the 125-pound title. Van captured the belt last December following an injury to Alexandre Pantoja, and now he faces his first title defense against a surging Japanese contender.
But this fight means so much more than a championship. If Taira wins, UFC President Dana White has hinted it could pave the way for the promotion's long-awaited return to Japan. The UFC hasn't held an event there since 2017, and White has been candid about why.
"It's been a while since we've done a fight in Japan," White said on CBS Mornings. "There's not a lot of talent coming out of Japan like there was back in the late '90s, early 2000s. If this kid wins and becomes world champ, we could go do a fight in Japan again."
Taira earned his title shot in spectacular fashion, knocking out former champion Brandon Moreno at UFC 323. Now sitting at 18-1 as a professional, his only blemish is a close split decision loss to Brandon Royval inside the Octagon. That narrow defeat only fuels his drive as he stands on the brink of history.
Some observers remain skeptical about White's promise. Fighters like Dricus du Plessis and Ilia Topuria were expected to bring events to their home countries after winning titles, but those plans never materialized. The reality is that the UFC often relies on host nations covering substantial site fees for international events. If Taira is going to bring an event back to Japan, it may ultimately come down to whether the country is willing to foot that bill.
For now, all eyes are on Newark, where Taira isn't just fighting for a belt. He's fighting to revive the spirit of Japanese MMA on the world's biggest stage. A win at UFC 328 could be the spark that reignites the UFC's love affair with the Land of the Rising Sun.
