The Chennai Super Kings' playoff dreams took a serious hit last night as the Lucknow Super Giants stormed to a commanding victory at the Ekana Stadium. On a pitch offering plenty of bounce and carry, it was an unexpected hero who stole the show for LSG—left-arm pacer Akash Singh, playing his first match of this IPL season.
Akash, a former CSK player whose career has been derailed by injuries, delivered a stunning spell that ripped through the top order. Bowling four overs on the trot—three of them during the Powerplay—he sent back Ruturaj Gaikwad, Sanju Samson, and Urvil Patel to finish with impressive figures of 3-26. His short-pitched deliveries proved too hot to handle for the CSK batters, setting the tone for a dominant LSG performance.
If Akash's bowling provided the early jolt, the Australian opening duo of Mitchell Marsh and Josh Inglis delivered the knockout blow. Marsh, who grew up mastering the bouncy WACA pitch in Perth, looked completely at home as he turned the same short balls that troubled CSK into effortless boundaries. He and Inglis raced to 86-0 in the Powerplay, with Marsh taking special aim at CSK's bowler of the season, Anshul Kamboj.
The fifth over was pure carnage. Marsh pulled Kamboj for four consecutive sixes, following it up with a boundary to take 28 runs from the over. By the time the partnership was broken, Marsh and Inglis had put on 135 runs in just 11.4 overs. Marsh's blistering 90 off 38 balls had effectively taken the fight out of CSK, while Inglis played the perfect supporting role.
Unlike their previous match at Chepauk, where LSG threw away a 91-run Powerplay, this time they finished the job. After both openers fell in quick succession, Nicholas Pooran ensured there were no hiccups, smashing 22 runs off Kamboj in the 17th over to seal a seven-wicket victory.
For CSK, the loss leaves their playoff hopes hanging by a thread. They now face a must-win situation in their final two games against Sunrisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Titans. It's a steep mountain to climb, and the team will need to regroup quickly if they want to keep their campaign alive.
As for Akash Singh, this performance was a heartwarming reminder of his talent. Having played just six matches for CSK as an injury replacement in 2023 before being released, he showed that sometimes the best stories come from the most unexpected places.
