Britain's Adam Yates loses nearly 14 minutes to rivals on stage 2 of the Giro d'Italia following a huge crash on a wet descent involving about 20 riders.

In a dramatic turn of events at the Giro d'Italia, British cycling star Adam Yates saw his hopes of overall victory take a devastating blow on stage two. The 33-year-old UAE-Team Emirates rider lost nearly 14 minutes to his rivals following a massive crash on a rain-soaked descent that involved approximately 20 riders.

The incident occurred with 21km remaining in the 221km stage to Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria—the second of three stages being held there as part of the race's Grande Partenza. As the peloton approached a right-hand downhill corner at around 60km/h, disaster struck. Yates' teammate Marc Soler was the first to go down when both wheels slid out on the wet surface, triggering a chain-reaction pile-up that left several riders with severe road rash and torn Lycra.

Yates himself hit an Armco barrier at speed, emerging bloodied and covered in mud. While he managed to finish the stage, he crossed the line a staggering 13 minutes and 46 seconds behind the leaders. The result all but extinguishes his dream of matching twin brother Simon's phenomenal overall win in last year's edition of this iconic race.

The crash also took a heavy toll on Yates' team. UAE-Team Emirates confirmed that both Jay Vine of Australia and Marc Soler of Spain abandoned the race and were taken to hospital for evaluation. Team boss Mauro Gianetti shared the update with TNT Sports, adding that Yates will be assessed by medical staff before deciding whether to continue.

Meanwhile, the stage itself was won in a sprint from a reduced group by Uruguay's Guillermo Thomas Silva of XDS-Astana. Germany's Florian Stork of Tudor Pro-cycling took second, with Italy's Giulio Ciccone of Lidl-Trek rounding out the podium.

Race favorite Jonas Vingegaard managed to avoid the chaos, positioning himself in a small breakaway group that led much of the latter stages. The Danish star eventually finished 21st with the same time as the leaders after a larger chasing group caught him in the final meters.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers cyclists face in spring classics and Grand Tours, where wet roads and high-stakes racing can combine with devastating results. For Yates and his team, the road ahead in this Giro just got a whole lot harder.
