The New York Yankees are already one of the best teams in baseball this season, but there's growing chatter that they could get even stronger by promoting their No. 1 prospect—and that move could spell trouble for Anthony Volpe.

While the Yankees have plenty of talent waiting in the wings, including arms like Carlos Rodón, Gerrit Cole, and others, it's infielder George Lombard Jr. who is drawing the most attention. According to Christopher Kline of Fansided.com, the time is now for the Yankees to call up their top prospect.

"George Lombard Jr. is their consensus No. 1 prospect, and he's tearing through the minors with an .873 OPS between Double-A and Triple-A this season," Kline writes.

Lombard, a natural shortstop, has been raking in the minors and is widely considered one of the best prospects in all of Major League Baseball. A promotion seems inevitable, but it would come with a major consequence: Anthony Volpe would lose his spot on the MLB roster.

Volpe, once hailed as the future of the Yankees' infield, has struggled to live up to the massive hype that followed him into the big leagues. With Lombard knocking on the door, the Yankees appear ready to explore other long-term options at shortstop.

If Lombard is called up and performs well, the Yankees' future at shortstop could belong to him, not Volpe. That would force Volpe to shift positions—perhaps to second base—especially if Jazz Chisholm Jr. departs in free agency this offseason.

However, with second and third base already looking settled, there may simply be no room for Volpe on the active roster if Lombard arrives. Kline is urging the Yankees to make the call, and if they do, Volpe's days in pinstripes could be numbered.
