The New York Yankees bullpen, a powerhouse to start the season, has hit a recent rough patch. After a string of shaky performances, the team is turning to a fresh arm, promoting right-handed reliever Angel Chivilli from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Chivilli, a 23-year-old acquired from the Colorado Rockies this past January, gets his first call to the big leagues. He arrives after a dominant stint in Triple-A, where he posted a perfect 0.00 ERA with nine strikeouts across 8.1 innings, showcasing the potential that made him a target for General Manager Brian Cashman.
While his overall 2023 stats in Colorado (a 7.06 ERA) might raise eyebrows, the Yankees are betting on his raw stuff. Chivilli brings serious heat, with a fastball averaging 97.1 mph that sits in the league's top tier. His true weapons, however, are a slider and changeup that generated whiff rates over 42% last season, offering a promising secondary arsenal to miss bats in high-leverage spots.
This promotion comes as the Yankees seek stability in their relief corps. Following a turbulent extra-inning win on Monday and a 7-1 loss on Tuesday, the team optioned reliever Yerry De Los Santos back to Triple-A, opening the door for Chivilli. He now has his chance to carve out a role in pinstripes and help solidify a bullpen in search of consistent, shutdown innings.
