This hot take might not be that spicy of a prediction.

The New York Yankees have long been defined by Aaron Judge's towering presence in the lineup, but a bold new prediction suggests the 2026 AL MVP trophy might not be heading to the Bronx Bombers' captain. And believe it or not, this isn't just a hot take—it's a very real possibility.

Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report recently stirred the pot with a prediction that a Yankee other than Judge would take home the AL MVP this season. "A New York Yankee wins AL MVP... but it won't be Aaron Judge," Miller wrote. "He (Judge) is the clear favorite for AL MVP. But let's have some fun with this one."

While Miller didn't name a specific player, all signs point to Ben Rice, the breakout star who has been nothing short of sensational. Through 33 games, Rice has posted numbers that put him in elite company. With a .343 batting average—best in the American League—along with 12 home runs, 27 RBIs, and an eye-popping 1.214 OPS, Rice leads all of Major League Baseball in on-base percentage (.455), slugging percentage (.759), and OPS+. His 234 OPS+ is a staggering figure that dwarfs even Judge's impressive 193 OPS+.

For context, Judge has been no slouch himself, posting a .273/.407/.659 slash line with 15 homers and a 2.4 bWAR. But Rice's offensive dominance has been on another level, making this MVP race more intriguing than many expected.

The one caveat? Playing time. Rice has been banged up and has seen a platoon role, limiting his plate appearances. But if manager Aaron Boone commits to Rice as an everyday player, and if Judge hits a rare rough patch or misses time, the rookie could very well leapfrog the veteran in the MVP race. For Yankees fans and baseball purists alike, this is a storyline worth watching—and a reminder that in the Bronx, the next superstar might already be in the lineup.
