This might turn out to be an expensive mistake for the Yankees.

The New York Yankees are riding high this season with a 27-17 record, just two games behind the scorching Tampa Bay Rays. But beneath that winning surface, a costly problem is brewing—one that could haunt the Bronx Bombers all year long.

The culprit? Outfielder Trent Grisham, who inked a $22 million deal after accepting the qualifying offer. What looked like a savvy investment after his 2025 breakout is now starting to look like fool's gold.

Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report recently called out Grisham as the Yankee who needs to turn things around—and fast. The numbers tell the story. Last season, Grisham was a force: 34 home runs, a .464 slugging percentage, an .811 OPS, and a stellar 123 OPS+ that earned him 3.5 bWAR. He looked like the real deal.

Fast forward to this year, and the production has vanished. Through 43 games, Grisham is hitting just .175 with a .365 slugging percentage and a .676 OPS. His OPS+ has dropped to 89—well below average—and his bWAR sits at 0.0. Even his home run pace (22 over a full season) can't mask the struggles.

Miller put it bluntly: "Grisham's 2025 breakout at the plate appears to have been fools' gold, back to a sub-.680 OPS for the fourth time in five seasons." In other words, last year might have been the exception, not the rule.

For a team with championship aspirations, every at-bat matters. And with $22 million tied up in a player who's regressed to his career norms, the Yankees are left wondering what could have been. Instead of banking on Grisham's resurgence, they could have turned to younger options like Spencer Jones or Jasson Dominguez—players who might offer more upside without the hefty price tag.

As the season heats up, the pressure is on. If Grisham can't find his groove, this expensive gamble could become one of the Yankees' biggest regrets.
