When opportunity knocks, you'd better answer. For Anthony Volpe, that call came Wednesday—and he didn't pick up.

Recalled from the minors after Jose Caballero went down with an injury, Volpe had the perfect chance to remind the Yankees why he was once their shortstop of the future. Instead, he went 0-for-3 at the plate and committed an error in the field. For a fanbase that has grown increasingly impatient with his inconsistency, it was a frustratingly familiar sight.

Now, Yankees manager Aaron Boone appears to have made up his mind. According to Chris Kirschner of The Athletic, Boone has all but confirmed that once Caballero is healthy, he'll reclaim the starting shortstop job. "Boone said it's his 'expectation' that Caballero will return to being the starting shortstop when he is healthy, adding that he has 'played as well as anyone out there,'" Kirschner reported.

And the numbers back that up. Caballero has been slightly above average at the plate with a 105 wRC+, but it's his glove that has truly shined—leading all major league shortstops with 9 Defensive Runs Saved. In a game where defense wins championships, that kind of production is hard to ignore.

Boone wouldn't commit to Volpe staying in the majors when Caballero returns, which speaks volumes. In baseball, you either seize your moment or watch it pass you by. Caballero seized his during the first month of the season, and now he's earned the right to keep the job until he proves otherwise.

For Volpe, it's back to the drawing board. For the Yankees, it's a clear vote of confidence in the player who has simply been better—no matter how tough that pill is to swallow.
