In a tough break for British boxing fans, Galal Yafai's highly anticipated world title showdown has been put on ice. The Olympic gold medalist was set to challenge unified flyweight champion Ricardo Sandoval on June 6 in Sheffield, but an injury suffered in training has forced a postponement.
This marks the second time the event at Utilita Arena has lost its headliner. Earlier, British WBC light-welterweight champion Dalton Smith was also forced to withdraw from his defense against Alberto Puello due to injury—a tough stretch for the Sheffield card.
For Yafai, the delay is another frustrating chapter in a career that's seen its share of twists. The 33-year-old from Birmingham hasn't stepped in the ring since his bout with Francisco Rodriguez Jr. last June—a fight originally ruled a loss but later overturned to a no-contest after Rodriguez failed a drug test. Despite that hiccup, Yafai remains undefeated as a professional (10-0, with seven of nine wins coming by stoppage) and brings the same electric style that earned him gold at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics.
But the show must go on, and fight night is still on. Stepping into the main event spotlight is Josh Padley, who will defend his European super-featherweight title against Aqib Fiaz. It's a compelling matchup that promises fireworks.
The undercard is stacked with rising talent, too. Undefeated teenage heavyweight Leo Atang fights in front of his home Yorkshire crowd, while fellow unbeaten prospects Adam Maca and Connor Mitchell look to keep their perfect records intact. Coventry middleweight Aaron Bowen takes on Troy Coleman, and Ibraheem Sulaimaan battles Ibrahim Nadim for the English super-featherweight belt.
While the wait for Yafai's world title shot continues, this reshuffled card still delivers plenty of action for fight fans. We'll keep you posted on the new date for Yafai vs. Sandoval—and in the meantime, gear up for a night of boxing that's shaping up to be something special.
