In the world of college baseball, dynasties are rare—but at Wright State, they're becoming the new normal. The Raiders have done it again, capturing their eighth consecutive Horizon League regular-season title in dominant fashion. For head coach Alex Sogard, that's seven straight crowns, a feat so routine that even the celebrations have become subdued. But this year, he made sure his squad paused to soak it all in.
"We're obviously fortunate," Sogard said after the Raiders sealed the deal with an 18-6 rout of Northern Kentucky on the road. "Patrick Fultz has been here four years, and he doesn't know any different. But it's something I'm guilty of—I know I take it for granted. Coaches and players go their whole careers and don't win a regular-season championship."
The clinching moment actually came a day early, on Friday, when Milwaukee—Wright State's closest competitor—also lost. But the Raiders saved their best for Saturday, putting on an offensive clinic. JP Peltier and Keegan Holmstrom each blasted home runs and drove in six runs, with Holmstrom's long ball marking the first of his career despite leading the league with a .372 average. Talk about a breakthrough at the perfect time.
Wright State (25-24 overall, 16-4 in conference) is firing on all cylinders heading into the postseason. They lead the Horizon League in hitting (.293), pitching (5.63 ERA), and fielding (just 30 errors in 49 games). That's the kind of balance that wins championships—and the Raiders have the trophy case to prove it.
"We played really good in league," Sogard noted. "Because of the standard we've set, we haven't won overall as much as we'd like. We really struggled in non-conference this year more than previous years. Our schedule is hard. But we're playing our best baseball right now, which is what you want."
Next up: a road test at Ohio State on Tuesday before wrapping up the regular season with a three-game series against Youngstown State starting Thursday. Then it's on to the Horizon League Tournament, set for May 20-23 at Nischwitz Stadium. If the Raiders keep this momentum, they'll be tough to stop.
"Our defense has been outstanding all year," Sogard added. "The core group we have is really athletic. They take pride in taking care of the ball. On the mound, we're starting to get into a really good rhythm."
For a program that's made championship-caliber play look routine, that rhythm could be the key to adding another trophy to the collection.
