Sébastien Ogier proved once again why he’s a nine-time world champion, storming back into the lead at Rally Portugal after a dramatic day of wet weather chaos. The Toyota veteran mastered treacherous conditions on Saturday, turning a nail-biting battle into a commanding 21.9-second advantage over Hyundai’s Thierry Neuville. Sami Pajari, also driving for Toyota, held third place, just 3.9 seconds further back.
The day started with a shock as Oliver Solberg stunned the field, climbing from fourth to first in wet stage 14 to lead Ogier by a razor-thin 0.5 seconds. But Solberg’s time at the top was short-lived. Ogier responded immediately after midday service, taking the stage win by a mere 0.1 seconds over Pajari in largely dry conditions. “I needed to push after Solberg’s time,” Ogier admitted. Solberg dropped 4.5 seconds in that test, falling to second overall, 4.0 seconds behind Ogier.
Then came the unraveling. A front-right puncture in rough stage 16—likely from exposed bedrock—cost Solberg 18.8 seconds, dropping him to fifth. That mistake elevated Ogier into a 3.9-second lead over Neuville, with Pajari moving to third and championship leader Elfyn Evans snatching fourth. The rally was far from over, though.
Heavy rain transformed stage 17 (Amarante) into a slippery, muddy nightmare. Ogier delivered a stunning performance, going 11.2 seconds faster than anyone else to extend his lead over Neuville to 16.0 seconds. “Not the most enjoyable stage, but we made it,” Ogier said. “The driving wasn’t awesome—it was about surviving. I’ll take that.” Solberg excelled again in the wet, but his third-fastest time only moved him up to fourth, ahead of Evans, who stopped briefly after losing the front of his car.
Ogier capped the day with another head-turning drive in stage 18, cementing his dominance. For rally fans, it was a masterclass in adapting to changing conditions—a reminder of why Ogier remains the driver to beat.
