The Isles of Scilly played host to an unforgettable bank holiday weekend as the World Pilot Gig Championships brought together thousands of rowers from 481 crews, including teams from as far as the USA. The event, spanning Friday to Sunday, featured intense racing across multiple categories, culminating in the men's and women's finals at St Mary's harbour.

In the women's competition, Helford River defended their title in a thrilling final against Fowey. Crew member Lena Budd described it as a "great weekend of racing," crediting their success to a focused mantra: "Take one stroke at a time and imagine we're back at home on the river. That really worked for us because we knew we couldn't lose our heads, and we had to beat Fowey, who are incredibly strong." The close finish saw Helford River edge ahead at the line, showcasing the grit and teamwork that defines gig rowing.

The men's final delivered a dramatic shift in power, with Falmouth ending Looe's six-year winning streak. This victory was especially sweet for Falmouth, who had lost the title to Looe in the previous two years. Crew member Jordan Smith reflected on the pressure: "This was a hard one, but it was more painful to lose a couple of times before. There's a bit of pressure when you go into races like that, especially against a crew like Looe—they kept pipping us at races that matter. No matter how resilient you think you are, it's tough to get past that, so it's quite nice to finally do it."

The championships, featuring crews from Cornwall and Devon, highlighted the passion and endurance of gig rowing—a sport that demands both physical strength and mental fortitude. Whether you're a seasoned rower or a fan of the water, events like these remind us why quality gear and unwavering spirit are essential for every stroke.
