Freddie Woodman has outlined his determination to help as much as possible in his role as third-choice Liverpool goalkeeper.

Woodman was thrust into the side for a Premier League debut in last weekend’s Merseyside Derby win at Everton, after Giorgi Mamardashvili was forced off with a knee issue.

With first-choice Alisson Becker already sidelined, Woodman came on as a substitute and helped the Reds to a dramatic 2-1 win at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

It was Woodman’s first appearance in the Premier League since 2021/22, and with Mamardashvili set to be sidelined for around two weeks, the 29-year-old is set to feature in upcoming games. The summer signing from Preston has opened up on how he has adjusted from first-team football in the Championship to a supporting role at Anfield.

“Being third choice is, from what I’ve seen, more important than what I thought coming in [here],” Woodman said.

“You are trying to have a relationship with the lads. So if Dom (Szoboszlai) wants to do extra free kicks, I want to be there to help him. If Mo (Salah) wants to do extra shooting, I want to be there to help him.

“You know, Mo Salah is coming to you and saying he wants to do extra shooting – it’s every kid’s dream. For me, I’ve watched him over the last seven to eight years and to build a relationship with Robbo, Curtis, Cody, Virgil…

“I saw these guys last season as superstars. And you come in and you realise that they’re just normal blokes and they’re good people and it’s been really nice to build those relationships. So it’s just trying to find a different role within the team and realising how important it is.”
