While Wolves' relegation to the Championship was confirmed on Monday, struggling Tottenham are desperate for points to avoid joining them. BBC Sport takes a look at the key themes ahead of Saturday's fixture (15:00 BST) at Molineux.

Saturday marks 118 days since Tottenham last enjoyed a top-flight victory back on 28 December. Fail to win again and it will equal their longest run without tasting success in the league of 16 matches set between December 1934 and April 1935.

Time is running out for Spurs if they are to avoid slipping into the second tier for the first time since their last relegation in 1977.

They came agonisingly close to finally picking up three points against Brighton last weekend but just couldn't hold on. In fact, they have failed to win any of the last five league matches in which they've led.

Their remaining fixtures come against teams currently 20th, 4th, 15th, 8th and 10th in the table and Opta's supercomputer gives them a 56.9% chance of going down, comfortably higher than that of their rivals West Ham at 38.6% and Nottingham Forest on a lowly 4.3%.

Head coach Roberto De Zerbi, without a win himself in his last 12 league matches with both Brighton and Spurs, insists that his side are able to win all five of their remaining games. They have only won seven league matches all season.

History is firmly against De Zerbi's claim as no side has ever been in the relegation zone with five matches of a Premier League season to play and won them all. The supercomputer also disagrees with him, as in the 10,000 simulations it calculated for the rest of the season Spurs won all five of their games on a mere 23 occasions.

A side in the relegation zone with five games to go has only won four of their last five matches on five occasions and there are only 18 instances of a team winning three of their remaining five. Spurs have it all to do.

The inevitable was confirmed for Wolves on Monday night as a point for West Ham at Crystal Palace was enough to bring their eight-year stay in the top flight to an end with five games still remaining.

After a mini-revival in which they lost just one of six league games, back-to-back heavy away defeats – 4-0 at West Ham and 3-0 to Leeds – helped hasten their slide into the Championship. Head coach Rob Edwards will be keen to stop the rot and not allow his side to bow out with a whimper.

That loss to Leeds was their 22nd of a miserable season. Only in four previous top-flight campaigns have they ever lost more matches, while their tally of failing to score in 17 league games is their most since they drew 19 blanks in a 46-game season in the second tier in 2000-01.

Wolves fans searching for cheer will fall back on their last three home games, in which they claimed seven points from matches with Arsenal, Aston Villa and Liverpool, scoring twice in each.

Plus, they have an excellent recent record against Tottenham that's seen them go unbeaten in their last six encounters, including three successive wins at Molineux.

Another further good omen is Rob Edwards' biggest Premier League win as a manager was 4-0 for Luton against a Brighton team led by Roberto De Zerbi.
