Wolfgang Wood led the St. Bonaventure High boys basketball program to three CIF-SS championship appearances in his six seasons as head coach.

Wolfgang Wood is taking his winning pedigree south. After six transformative seasons at St. Bonaventure High, the highly successful boys' basketball coach is departing for a new challenge at San Diego's Cathedral Catholic High, a perennial powerhouse.

Wood's tenure with the Seraphs was nothing short of remarkable. Taking over the program at just 26 years old in 2020, he quickly built a culture of excellence, compiling a 115-63 overall record. His teams captured three Tri-Valley League titles and, most impressively, made three consecutive CIF-Southern Section championship game appearances from 2023 to 2025, a testament to consistent high-level performance.

The 2025 Tri-Valley League Coach of the Year also led St. Bonaventure on a deep run in the 2022-23 CIF-State Regional playoffs, finishing as runners-up. His final squad this past season was the last local team standing in the Division 6 playoffs, advancing to the quarterfinals.

In an emotional farewell, Wood reflected on his time in Ventura County. "I loved every moment of being here," he said. "Coaching here... it's a community. It's a family, it's a fraternity out here... I was just glad to be a part of [the county] growing, in my opinion, to be a very good basketball area."

The school expressed its gratitude on social media, posting, "Thank you, Coach Wood, for your unwavering dedication... Your leadership, passion, and commitment have made a lasting impact on our student-athletes both on and off the court."

Wood's move is a homecoming of sorts. He grew up in Ladera Ranch, just a half-hour from his new school, and his basketball roots run deep in Southern California. A standout player at Santa Margarita High and Cal Lutheran University, Wood comes from a family of athletes, including his mother, former UCLA center Tia Wood.

His proven ability to build a contender makes him an exciting hire for Cathedral Catholic, signaling that the program aims to maintain its elite status. For St. Bonaventure, the search begins for a successor to continue the winning tradition Wood established.
