After more than three decades of waiting, the Wittenberg University baseball team is finally heading back to the NCAA Division III Tournament—a milestone that has the entire campus buzzing with excitement.
The Tigers, who last made the tournament in 1994, will face Webster on Friday, May 15, at Adrian College in Adrian, Michigan. As the No. 1 seed in the Adrian region, Wittenberg will take on a tough field that includes host school Adrian (the No. 2 seed) and two other competitors vying for a regional championship.
This long-awaited return to the national stage didn't come easy. Wittenberg earned an at-large bid after a strong season that saw them finish as runners-up in both the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) regular season and the league tournament. Their 31-11 overall record speaks to the team's resilience and depth, making them a formidable contender in the regional bracket.
"Today is an exciting day for our program," said Head Coach Mitchell Griffiths. "Finally breaking through and earning a spot in the NCAA Regional for the first time in over 30 years is truly special. I’m incredibly happy for our current players, as well as all the former players who helped build this program and put us in this position. We’re looking forward to heading to Adrian and competing against three outstanding teams for a regional championship."
For fans of college baseball and underdog stories alike, this tournament run is a reminder that perseverance pays off. Whether you're a Wittenberg alum or just love a good comeback story, the Tigers' journey is one worth following. As they step onto the field this weekend, they'll be carrying not just their own hopes, but the dreams of a program that has waited over 30 years for this moment.
