Apr. 10—It became official Monday that the Gonzaga women's basketball team saw two players put their names in the portal — senior guard Vera Gunaydin, who redshirted this year, and freshman guard Paige Lofing of Billings, Montana. Gunaydin was expected to enter the portal. She wants to play somewhere with an ultimate goal of playing professionally overseas. Lofing's decision was unexpected. ...

The Gonzaga women's basketball roster is undergoing a shift as the transfer portal officially opens, with two guards departing the program. Senior Vera Gunaydin, who redshirted this past season, and freshman Paige Lofing have entered their names, creating two open scholarships for the Zags.

Gunaydin's move was anticipated, as the guard seeks a final collegiate opportunity to showcase her skills with an eye toward a professional career overseas. Lofing's decision, however, comes as a surprise. The freshman from Billings, Montana, showed flashes of potential in her limited role, including a clutch deep three-pointer to force overtime against Oregon State and a career-high 17-point performance in a win at Washington State.

With these departures, Head Coach Lisa Fortier and her staff now have clear needs to address in the portal. The primary target is expected to be a taller, athletic point guard to bolster the backcourt. While the addition of incoming freshman Abby Lusk provides depth, the Zags may also look to add another forward to complement their existing core of six.

Meanwhile, in-state rival Washington State is also navigating portal losses. The Cougars saw sophomore guard Marta Alsina and redshirt freshman forward Keandra Koorits enter the transfer portal. Both were rotation players, with Koorits averaging 6.7 points per game. Coach Kamie Ethridge now has at least two scholarships to fill as she looks to rebuild her roster for the competitive Pac-12 landscape.
