Australia's women's cricket team is entering a new era. With legendary wicketkeeper-batter Alyssa Healy officially retired, the squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup has been announced—and it comes with a fresh leadership structure that signals both stability and change.
Sophie Molineux, the crafty left-arm spinner, will captain the side for the tournament set to take place in England and Wales from June 12 to July 5. This marks the first World Cup squad selection since Healy stepped away from the game, having announced her retirement plans back in January. Healy's one-day international career ended on a high note in March, when she smashed a brilliant 158 in a dominant victory over India.
The new leadership team also features Ashleigh Gardner as one of two vice-captains, alongside Tahlia McGrath. Gardner was confirmed in the role Wednesday, having been passed over for the top job earlier this year. It's a testament to her value in the squad that she now steps into a key leadership position for a major tournament.
The World Cup itself promises to be a thrilling affair. Twelve teams will battle it out across 33 matches at seven venues, with the final set for the iconic Lord's. New Zealand enters as the defending champion, having beaten South Africa in the UAE last year. But Australia is no stranger to the top step of the podium—they claimed their sixth title in 2023, defeating South Africa by 19 runs to secure a third consecutive championship.
Australia's campaign kicks off on June 13 against South Africa at Old Trafford—a fitting opening clash between two recent finalists.
One of the biggest talking points in the squad selection was the inclusion of left-arm fast bowler Lucy Hamilton, who replaces Darcie Brown. Brown has 34 wickets in 41 T20 matches, but selector Shawn Flegler explained the decision was tactical. "With at least six right-arm pace options in the mix and raw pace expected to be less effective, we opted to go with Lucy Hamilton, who offers something different as a left-arm quick," he said.
Grace Harris and all-rounder Annabel Sutherland also return, adding depth and experience to a lineup that already boasts plenty of firepower.
"These squads are never easy to select, but we're confident with the balance and stability we've got across the group," Flegler added. "It's an experienced group and one we believe is capable of winning the World Cup."
