The Wisconsin Badgers are moving on in the NCAA softball tournament after a thrilling walk-off victory that had fans on the edge of their seats until the very last swing.
In a classic pitchers' duel that stretched into extra innings, the eighth-seeded Badgers edged out Baylor 2-1 on Friday, May 15, in the first round of the Austin regional. The game was a testament to resilience, clutch hitting, and the kind of drama that makes postseason softball unforgettable.
With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, shortstop Hannah Conger stepped up to the plate with just one hit all afternoon. But when it mattered most, she delivered a game-winning double that brought Alivia Bark racing home. The moment was pure magic—Conger's third walk-off hit of the season and just the third walk-off win in Wisconsin's NCAA Tournament history.
The Badgers' ace, Shelby Jacobson, was the unsung hero of the day. She threw a grueling 141-pitch complete game, holding the Bears to just one run over nine innings. Baylor managed six hits and six walks but left 10 runners stranded, unable to break through against Jacobson's relentless pitching.
The game remained scoreless for the first five innings before Wisconsin broke through in unconventional fashion in the sixth. A bunt by Kaylie Whidden led to two Baylor throwing errors, putting a runner on third with just one out. Bark then executed a perfectly placed squeeze bunt to bring home the first run of the game.
Baylor, however, refused to go quietly. Down to their final strike in the seventh inning, the Bears strung together back-to-back doubles from Faith Piper and Amber Toven to tie the game and send it to extras. They even had a golden opportunity in the eighth inning with a runner on second and no outs, but a spectacular line-drive double play snuffed out the threat.
The Badgers had their own missed chances earlier, leaving the bases loaded in the third inning and runners on second and third in the fifth. Baylor's Peyton Tanner also went the distance, allowing two runs on five hits and six walks in a gutsy performance.
Next up for Wisconsin is a showdown with the reigning national champion Texas Longhorns on Saturday, May 16, at noon. The host Longhorns will first face Wagner, but all eyes are already on what promises to be an epic clash between two powerhouse programs.
